Announcing…the God Centered Mom Podcast! Interview with Leslie Johnson (Sursee Gal)

I'm just giddy to share this news with y'all.

For the past month I've been busy behind-the-scenes interviewing, recording, and editing the new God Centered Mom podcast! Now the day has arrived to share the first episode with y'all (see link above?). WOOHOO!

But let me back up a bit and tell you how I became hooked on this whole podcasting deal...

About a year ago, Kat Lee (www.inspiredtoaction.com ...yes, she's pretty much inspired most of the good things in my mothering and blogging) posted about how she loves to listen to podcasts while doing chores. Washing dishes, folding laundry...whatever the task, she just pops in an earbud and is encouraged/inspired/educated while she works.

How do you listen to a podcast?

While the idea of making chores easier sounded wonderful, there was one barrier to entry: getting the podcasts on my phone. I knew the podcasts were out there and I had the technology (iPhone) to listen. But how did I connect the two?

Just like most of my "barriers to entry", it is a much easier process than I imagined.

podcastapp

I realized my iPhone came with a podcast app already uploaded (purple square with a "person"/mic? and sound semi-circles emanating out of him...see above?). When I opened the podcast app there were different options at the bottom: My podcasts, My Stations, Top charts, downloads. At the top left,  I could choose: "Store".

Once in the store, I searched (bottom left corner, the magnifying glass icon) for the couple podcasts I'd heard about (Kat's "Inspired to Action podcast", Tricia Goyer's "Living Inspired" podcast, and Mel & Sophie's "the Big Boo Cast"). Then I tapped the "down arrow" button to download the podcast to my phone. OR I could even subscribe to that podcast so I'll always get the most up-to-date episodes.

When do you find time to listen?

Once the podcasts are on my phone, I can start and stop listening whenever I have a spare moment. My absolute favorite time to listen is while I'm grocery shopping. Basically from the start to the end of my trip I can listen to an entire podcast and learn something new. (I should probably point out I do my shopping on Sunday afternoons while my kids nap...so I'm not completely ignoring my children so I can be inspired as a mother. That would be silly.)

Why are you podcasting, Heather?

Now that I've sold you on podcast idea, you may be wondering why a busy mother of 4 boys is hosting a podcast. Great question!

Oh, the list of reasons is long...but first and foremost, being an extrovert, writing is not an easy medium for me. While I love sharing my thoughts in words, the actual practice of writing requires lots of time alone (not so fun). As an extrovert, being with people energizes me. With podcasting I get to interview others--hear their stories, discuss various issues and solve the world's problems...all in 30 minutes. Thrilling!

Secondly, I'm a communicator. As a speech-language pathologist, talking is my favorite. Podcasts give me a chance to use a specific skill set to encourage other moms and continue this "God-centered mom" ministry on another level.

Lastly, there are soooo many wonderful people I want to share with the world. Moms and dads who have been through a lot of hard things and come out alright because they were centered in God. Since God created me to be a connector, one way to connect who I know with you, the listener, is through broadcasting a story and having you hear it. (In fact, it was listening to Tricia Goyer's interview with Amber & Guy Lia that prompted me to tweet Amber and ask her to guest post about honoring God in Hollywood. You never know what God's gonna do).

What will the God Centered Mom podcast be about?

The underlying theme will of course be "How to be a God Centered Mom". This message primarily relates to the mom's heart, replacing "me" with "He", getting Christ back on the throne of our hearts instead of pride/ourselves. But we'll also talk practical tips on how to follow God's heart in serving others. (In an upcoming interview my husband shares his experience doing short-term mission trips with his family.)

My first interview (Episode One) is with a woman God placed in my life 4 years ago when she took care of Watts in the newborn church nursery. Her name is Leslie Johnson, a fellow 4-boy mom. Since her boys are all grown and off to college/post-college, she shares a lot of wisdom with me and generously encourages me in mothering. Now she will get to encourage you as well!! Leslie writes over at www.surseegal.com (you can learn about where that name came from in our interview).

Without further ado, sometime this week I hope you can listen to our conversation and be blessed.

Here's a little reminder on how to listen to the podcast (thanks Kat for these steps!).

1. Listen on the blog. Click through to GodCenteredMom.com and click the play button at the beginning of this post.
2. Listen on your smartphone, iPad or iPod Touch – There are a lot of great podcasting apps. Apple has a free one (that I mentioned) in the app store, there is also one called Downcast (that Kat uses). It allows you to search for shows, subscribe to them and even speed up the audio.
3. Subscribe to the Podcast – access the podcast in iTunes (Click here to access via iTunes). You can also search for it on your smartphone app (like the ones listed above) and subscribe.

GIRLFRIEND. I am SO excited about this. I totally want to do a podcast. I think it’s b/c I just like to talk. And sometimes I want it to be a my-thoughts-on-my-favorite-TV-shows podcast. So, that might be weird.

Anywhoo. I’m about to be your #1 fan. I mean, your #1 podcast fan b/c I’m already your #1 fan.

(and lemme know when you need a special guest. Ahem.)

Really enjoyed this! Just sat down at the computer and listened after my 4 boys were tucked in. Still haven’t put the podcast app up and don’t know that listening at the grocery store will work for me (how do you do that?) :), but I’m SO very excited you are doing this! Love, love, love this encouragement! Thanks!

  8. Jacki Rucksdashel

This is awesome Heather!! I’m so excited to not only read your words, but get to listen to them! I loved being able to work on homeschool planning and listen while I cut and pasted. I especially like the jazzy music at the beginning and end. And it totally made me feel like you and Leslie were right here sharing in a conversation. Can’t wait for more!

What was the list of books for boys that Leslie mentioned? loved the podcast!!
