Few Favorite {Christ}mas Gifts

Here is a list of my favorite God-centered gifts for this Christmas:

1. What’s in the Bible DVDs

I received a free “Whats in the Bible” DVD at the Relevant Conference. My boys love it!

These videos were created by Phil Vischer (from Veggie Tales). Phil Vischer and his cast of puppets present the truth of the Bible (content, history, structure) in a fun and entertaining way.

I was concerned at first that the video was too funny and that the boys would be not absorb any of the truth presented. I was wrong. When I heard my eldest singing the main theme song lyrics “Do you know what’s in the Bible? Is it true, is it reliable?”, I knew these videos were a good thing for our family.

There are a lot of great deals going on right now. Check out these bloggers, videos and deals:

2. Seed Family Worship CDs

I love these worship CDs for the following reasons:
1) The lyrics of the songs are 100% Scripture
2) Each song includes the Scripture reference (the hardest part to memorize)
3) The music itself is very enjoyable to listen to & worshipful
4) When you purchase the CDs (for $13) it comes with two identical copies…the intent being that you share one copy with a friend/neighbor/family/etc
5) They are organized by content (Seeds of Faith, Seeds of Courage, Seeds of Faith)

Check out their website here: Seeds Family Worship CDs

3. Jesus Storybook Bible
This is not your traditional Bible. This Bible weaves the overall story of sin-redemption-love into each of the stories of the Bible.

“Written for children ages four and up, The Jesus Storybook Bible tells the one story underneath all the stories of the Bible and points to the birth of a child, the Rescuer, Jesus. Complete with 44 Bible stories, The Jesus Storybook Bible paints a beautiful portrait of Jesus and invites children to see that he is not only at the center of God’s great story of redemption—he is at the center of their story too”

4. Tabletop Truth placemats

Love these placemats…

From their website:
“As moms of young and busy kiddos we recognize the challenge of setting aside intentional time to spend together as a family. Our desire is to give you easy tools to incorporate God’s Word into your daily routine.

We observed that our toddlers and kids learned colors, shapes, and ABC’s from educational place mats and thought “why not Biblical truths?”…the most important things we can impart to our children!!

Tabletop TRUTHS is a collection of durable, colorful place mats designed to be used as a springboard to Biblical knowledge, spiritual growth and great family conversations. Each mat comes with thought-provoking questions, conversation starters and Scripture references to help you teach your children.”

They have a special set of 6 placements for $45. Great gifts for your kids or nieces/nephews.

6. “One Thousand Gifts” by Ann Voskamp

I am a huge fan of this book.  It is a great gift for teachers and girlfriends. I also made journals out of composition books covered in scrapbook paper to go with the “One Thousand Gifts” book. The journal can be used to keep track of their one thousand gifts of grace.

  1. Kristi

I’m gonna check out #3 & #4!! I did buy some gifts from daysprings sale! Love Christ centered gifts!!!

  2. Hannah Weeks

I’m sorry to be negative about something on this fun list. I was really excited when I first heard about the Jesus Storybook Bible. However, after doing some research, I would like to strongly warn against choosing this as your children’s Bible. While I love the intent of teaching children at a young age how Christ is THE story of the Bible, this Bible will also communicate to your children loosy-goosy doctrine, practically portraying sin as simply “mistakes”. The post-modern message it sends is too dangerous for your childrens’ souls and not to be taken lightly. However, there is a better alternative written with the same goal in mind that we and our children love. It’s called “The Big Picture Story Bible.” Hope this is helpful to someone. I am very much looking forward to trying out Seed Family Worship though!

Thank you Hannah for your perspective. I truly appreciate it. This Bible should definitely not be the only Bible in your family’s repertoire.

However, I do feel that it provides insight into how all the individual Bible stories fit into the larger story. I grew up in the church and did not come away with this understanding until well into adulthood. I understand your perspective on how it treats sin lightly. However, I feel that in most Christian homes this is not the problem. Typically, the problem is that our children don’t truly grasp the grace that has been given them. Yes, sin is serious business. Yes, it required the death of Jesus to pay for it. But that sin has been paid for and we don’t need to beat ourselves up over it again. We live in the Spirit. We are motivated to do good b/c of His huge sacrifice in love.

I will definitely check out “The Big Picture Story Bible”…would love it if it told the big story without losing key doctrine.
As far as a children’s Bible that most closely follows an adult Bible I would reccommend “Egermeier’s Bible Story Book”. Good for Kindergarteners and up.
